What is Extend and who is it for?

Extend is recreational exercise to music for older men and women and less able people of all ages. It is not just for senior citizens in care homes, it is also for the recently retired and fit as well as the new ‘healthy very old’ – a growing number of people still leading independent lives into their late eighties and beyond.

What are the benefits of Extend?

Extra years only have true value if they are accompanied by the independence to make one’s own life choices. Extend’s mission is to enhance later life by promoting health, increasing mobility and independence, improving strength, co-ordination and balance and counteracting loneliness and isolation. Extend has improved the wellbeing of many people in Ceredigion and provided practitioners with job satisfaction as well as the potential for additional income.

What does the course entail?

The course costs £500 per person (this fee is paid by the Strategy for Older People) and covers a variety of subjects such as anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, the process of ageing as well as the main component of movement to music. Promoting good health, diet and nutrition etc are also covered. There is a written (or oral) exam and a practical assessment - but don’t be put off by this as full individual support is provided.

Places are limited so allocation is on a first come first serve basis
